Biography

John D. Doherty(DABT 1982-2017) received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and did postdoctoral work in pharmacology at Yale and Kyoto University. He is currently an independent toxicologist with a specialty in neurotoxicology retired from the USEPA Office of Pesticide programs where he was responsible for evaluating the toxicity databases for pesticides. He has published papers on the mechanism of the pesticides DDT and pyrethroids (interaction with nerve physiology including transmitter release); organotins (as endocrine disruptors); phencyclidine and triadimefon (as a non-amphetamine dopaminergic agents); lead (interaction with DHA); and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (natural occurrence and metabolism in brain). His most current interest concerns the utilization of environmental epidemiology studies in the risk characterization of chemicals.

Biography

Merab G. Tsagareli graduated from Tbilisi State University in 1977 and completed his post-graduate studies at Lomonosov State University of Moscow. He received his Ph.D. in 1982, and his D.Sc. in 1995 (habilitation). Dr. Tsagareli served as Director of Beritashvili Institute of Physiology (2006-2008), and he was a Secretary of the Beritashvili Physiological Society of Georgia (1996-1998), affiliated with the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) at the 31st World Congress of Physiological Sciences in Saint Petersburg (1997). He was a principal founder and founding Secretary-General of the Georgian Neuroscience Association (1996-2008), a member of the Governing Council of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO, 1996-2008), and one of the Founders and Founding members of the Council of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS, 1998-2008) at the 1st Forum of European Neuroscience in Berlin (1998). He has also been a member of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives since 1997. Dr. Tsagareli is the Founder and current President of the Georgian Pain Research Society and a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP)since 1999. At present, his research focuses on studies of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in pain and itch. The second topic is the role of opioid and cannabinoid systems in analgesic and tolerance effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). He also has a great interest in the history of physiology and neuroscience. Currently, Dr. Tsagareli is a Laboratory Director of Pain and Analgesia at Ivane Beritashvili Center for Experimental Biomedicine, Tbilisi, Georgia.

Alex Makriyannis is the George Behrakis Chair of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, and is the Founder and Director of the Center for Drug Discovery. He is a highly successful medicinal chemist and is well recognized nationally and internationally for his important contributions in endocannabinoid research. This relatively newly characterized biochemical system, where he played an important role in its discovery, regulates many physiological functions including pain, neuroprotection, addiction, immunomodulation and cognition. Over the past four decades, his laboratory has designed and synthesized some of the key pharmacological endocannabinoid probes that are widely used and serve as leads for the development of new medications. He has also made important contributions aimed at understanding the molecular basis of cannabinoid activity. He has been a creative pioneer in the field of chemical biology where he combined the use of medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics, his work is recognized for its high level of originality. M. Natália D. S. Cordeiro completed her Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Porto (Portugal) in 1995, focusing on Monte Carlo simulations, with additional research traineeships at the University of Barcelona (Spain) and University of Pisa (Italy). Currently, she is Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and leads the "Cheminformatics and Materials" research group at the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV-REQUIMTE). Her scientific research covers a wide variety of problems ranging from materials science to catalysis, including drug design and toxicology. Equally varied as the research topics are the methods employed to study them, which involve molecular simulations as quantum mechanics calculations and even machine learning tools. She is the author of 350+ SCI works (h-index: 53), of 25+ book chapters, and 150+ oral communications in international conferences, and has also performed extensive evaluation work for several research national and foreign entities.

Dr. Koichiro Tsuchiya is a Professor in the Department of Medical Pharmacology, in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Tokushima University in Japan. After graduating in Pharmacology, Dr. Koichiro Tsuchiya was a Pharmacist at Tokushima University Hospital from 1992 to 1997. He received his PhD in Medicine from Tokushima University in 1997 and became Assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the Tokushima University School of Medicine. He became Full Professor in 2007. From 1998 to 2000, Dr Tsuchiya was a Visiting fellow at National Institute of the Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)/NIH in the laboratory of Dr. Ronald P. Mason. Dr Tsuchiya’s main research interests are in Clinical Pharmacology and Free Radical Chemistry. This includes the detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in vivo using electron paramagnetic resonance. After returning to the Japan, Dr Tsuchiya clarified the physiological effects of nitrite by using the electron spin resonance method. That is, nitrite, which has been detrimental to the organism, has been clarified to have the organ protective activity by becoming NO being reduced in the body. Recently, Dr Tsuchiya had found that nitrite is one of the intracellular signaling molecules, and has an effect on glycolipid metabolism. Dr Tsuchiya is a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, Japanese Society of Hypertension, and the Japanese Pharmacological Society.

He received his Ph.D. in Materials and Corrosion Science, from Mohammed First University, Morocco, 2011. He had published more than 267 papers in international journals (indexed Scopus) with h-index = 47 and presented about 170 communications in symposia and national/international meetings. He has developed two Moroccan patents and three U.S. patents. He is on the editorial board of twenty six (26) international journals and a reviewer in more than fifty peer-reviewed international journals published by Elsevier, Springer, Royal Society of Chemistry, American Chemical Society, Taylor and Francis, etc. He is the author of a two books. His main research interests are in the field of Physical Chemistry, especially electrochemistry (Corrosion and corrosion inhibition in all media for metals and alloys using various techniques). He is currently interested in using some quantum chemical methods like density functional theory (DFT), Molecular Dynamics Simulation and other semi-empirical methods to study corrosion inhibition efficiencies of compounds. Recently, he is interested to organic solar cells, the elaboration and characterization of thin films via electrodeposition and their applications.

Beate Escher is Head of Department of Cell Toxicology at the Helmholtz centre for Environmental research since October 2014. She holds a professorship in Environmental Toxicology at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen. She is lecturer (Privatdozent) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in ETHZ, Switzerland. She holds a professorship at the University of Queensland and an adjunct professorship at Griffith University, Australia. She is member of the German Council of Science and Humanities and Associate Editor with Environmental Science and Technology. Beate Escher is internationally recognized for her work on chemical pollution in the environment. Her research focuses on developing scientifically sound in vitro tools and methodologies for risk assessment of micropollutants in the environment and in people. Escher’s expertise includes the development of in vitro bioassays and applications of new approach methods for monitoring and mode-of-action based effect assessment of organic micropollutants including pharmaceuticals, pesticides and persistent organic pollutants, environmental transformation products, and mixtures. She works towards improving dosing and interpretation of high-throughput in vitro bioassays and developed the robotic bioassay platform CITEPro at UFZ (www.ufz.de/citepro). More practically oriented aspects include passive sampling of sediment, biota and human tissue and effect-based methods for water quality assessment, covering a wide range of different water types from wastewater to drinking water and treatment processes including biological treatment, filtration and advanced oxidation processes, as well as applications of in vitro tools for biomonitoring in fish, mammals and human tissues.

John D. Schuetz received his Ph.D. in Biochemical Pharmacology/Toxicology (with Robert B. Diasio) from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1984 and completed his postdoctoral training in Molecular Cancer Biology (with I. David Goldman and Eric H. Westin (a Dr. Robert C. Gallo protégé), and subsequently worked with Dr. Philip Guzelian on CYPs, also at the Medical College of Virginia. In 1992, he joined the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as an Assistant Member. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Member in 1997 and then to Member in 2005. In 2006, he was appointed Vice Chair of the department and currently holds this position. He has broad research interests in the role of ABC transporters in normal physiology and pathophysiology. His lab’s current studies are elucidating how transporters affect the biology as well as the therapeutic response of medulloblastoma and acute myeloid leukemia. Dr. Schuetz has authored over 154 articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed several book chapters. Dr. Schuetz has been elected to the AAAS Electorate nominating committee, elected Chair of the Toxicology Division of American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), Councilor to ASPET and is currently serving as Past-President of ASPET. Further, he was nominated to membership in the ASBMB. Stephen Tower received his medical degree from the University of Washington (Seattle) and he completed internship in Internal Medicine atDartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (Lebanon, New Hampshire) followed by 4 years of service as a General Medical Officer in the Indian Health Service in Alaska. He then completed residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a current Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He has practiced Orthopedic Surgery in Anchorage Alaska since 1992 with a focus on hip, knee, and shoulder replacement. He is an affiliate Professor of Medicine at the Washington, Wyoming, Alaskan, Montana and Idaho Medical School (WWAMI program, University of Alaska – Anchorage). Since 1992 he hascollaborated with Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering Center (Hanover, New Hampshire) on research of failure mechanisms of modern arthroprosthetic componentsthrough analysis of arthroprosthetic components removed at the time of revision joint replacement surgery. Explant analysis is an important component of Dr. Tower’s publications on catastrophic failures of overly thin plastic acetabular liners,1 and the clinical implications of wear or corrosion of cobalt-chromium arthroprosthetic components.2-14 Dr. Tower authored the index case report of cobaltism from modern primary hip replacement in in October of 2010, Arthroprosthetic cobaltism: neurological and cardiac manifestations in two patients with metal-on-metal arthroplasty: a case report.13 These patients were implanted withJohnson & Johnson’ssoon to be recalled ASR XL metal-on-metal hip replacement.The report was unusual in that Dr. Tower was both the author of the report and CASE 1. The report was accompanied by an unprecedented skeptical commentary by the Presidential Line of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Commentary on an article by Stephen S. Tower, MD: "Arthroprosthetic cobaltism: neurological and cardiac manifestations in two patients with metal-on-metal arthroplasty. a case report" .15 In the ensuing years Dr. Tower continued to encounter cobaltism in his patients leading to further case-reports, series, and most recently, a prospective study of the relationship of the years of exposure to a chrome-cobalt orthopedic-implant and urine-cobalt, and the early symptoms of cobaltism. His experience with orthopedic-implant-cobaltism (OIC) as patient, surgeon, researcher, and patient safety advocate has been featured in The New York Times, Consumer Reports, three book chapters, a Netflix’s documentary (The Bleeding Edge), and episodes of medical TV serials House, Gray’s Anatomy, The Resident, and New Amsterdam. Dr. Tower gave a TEDx talk on his experience with OICthe Summer of 2019, Cobalt Toxicity: Is Your Hip Replacement Poisoning You?Later that year Dr. Tower testified before an FDA panel scoping the immune complications of orthopedic-implant related cobalt-chromium metallosis. Lars holds a PhD in chemistry. As Chief Technology Officer at iOnctura, Lars is primarily responsible for the non-clinical development activities. These include non-clinical safety and toxicology, manufacturing and project management. He is a medicinal chemist with over 20 years of experience in biopharma R&D and delivered multiple clinical candidates and lead compounds for different therapeutic areas including oncology. Prior to founding iOnctura he has held various positions in project management and project leadership spanning early discovery up to commercial products and dealing with both biologics and small molecules. Lars has previously worked at Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Organon, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Merck.

Dr. Ruben Abagyan is a Professor in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, which he joined in 2009. He received his master’s and Ph.D. degree in molecular physics at MPTI and MSU. At the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, he developed internal coordinate mechanics and structural docking approach (ICM) for structure prediction and docking. He founded Molsoft LLC, received his tenure at New York University and Courant Institute of Mathematics, continued from 1999 at Novartis Functional Genomics Institute as a Director of Computational Chemistry and Biology, and the Scripps Research Institute as a professor. Dr. Abagyan serves on international review panels for Institutes in Switzerland, UK, EU and Hong Kong. He received CapCure awards, Princess Diana Award and medal in Sydney, Australia, AACP Teacher of the Year award and UCSD-SSPPS Faculty-of-the-Year awards. R.A. co-authored 333 research papers and book chapters (over 40,000 citations, H-index of 96). His research interests include methods, data and tools for accelerated computer-aided drug discovery, repurposing, and development.

Brandon Lucke-Wold was born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO. He graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Neuroscience and distinction in honors from Baylor University. He completed his MD/PhD, Master’s in Clinical and Translational Research, and the Global Health Track at West Virginia University School of Medicine. His research focus was on traumatic brain injury, neurosurgical simulation, and stroke. At West Virginia University, he also served as a health coach for the Diabetes Prevention and Management program in Morgantown and Charleston, WV, which significantly improved health outcomes for participants. In addition to his research and public health projects, he is a co-founder of the biotechnology company Wright-Wold Scientific, the pharmaceutical company CTE cure, and was a science advocate on Capitol Hill through the Washington Fellow’s program. He has also served as president of the WVU chapters for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Neurosurgery Interest group, and Erlenmeyer Initiative Entrepreneur group. In addition, he has served as vice president for the graduate student neuroscience interest group, Nu Rho Psi Honor Society, and medical students for global health. He was an active member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He is currently a member of the UF House Staff Council, Positive Culture Committee, Quality Improvement Committee, Board of Directors Alachua County Medical Society, and Accreditation Requirements Review Committee. He is married to Noelle Lucke-Wold and has two children. As a family, they enjoy running with their dogs, rock climbing, and traveling. Dr. Patra received his MD in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology from Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital under Government of Odisha in 2007. He also received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree from the same institution at Berhampur, Ganjam, Odisha in 1997. In addition, he has received his Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) for Hospital Administration from Pondicherry University under Government of India, in 2015. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) since 2018. Dr. Patra is a highly accomplished and experienced forensic pathologist, toxicologist, and legal medicine expert. Currently, I serve as a Professor and researcher at the University of Vienna. I earned my Master’s degree in Biology from Al-Azhar University in 2005 and subsequently worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the Faculty of Science, Al-Azhar University, Egypt, from 2005 to 2007. In 2012, I successfully obtained my Ph.D. degree in Cell Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna. Following that, I pursued a postdoctoral career at the Institute of Pharmacology and toxicology, University of Vienna, from 2013 to 2016.

Irene Martins holds a PhD in Ecology and is an expert in Ecological Modelling. She has been working as a researcher in coastal and marine ecosystems for more than 30 years, with a focus on the effects of multiple stressors on the composition and function of marine organisms and ecosystems. She develops numerical models that account for the effects contaminants on marine food webs, and she is interested in assessing the type of interactions between different environmental stressors.

He was also awarded the International Best Researcher in Management Science and Engineering at the Asia Research Awards (International Congress for Research Excellence 2024) in India, in March 2024.

Biography

Dr. Jiyoung Jeong obtained both MSc and Ph.D Degrees from Dong-A university in South Korea, supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (Research subsidies for Ph.D Candidates). Specializing in nanoparticle toxicity, and previous research was focused on evaluating in vivo and in vitro toxicity and conducting toxicokinetic studies on body burden. Currently, Dr. Jiyoung Jeong serves as a Postdoctoral researcher working at Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, focusing on the toxicokinetics of radiolabeled chemical compounds.
