Graduate education in Canada with MSc in Virology and PhD in immunology Postdoctoral fellowship at Walter and Eliza Hall of Medical Research in Melbourne Australia in Cellular Immunology 1970-72.Established research Program at University of Saskatchewan on Viral immunology supported by Medical Research Council of Canada.Moved to College of Veterinary Medicine University of Tennessee in 1977 where he remains as the Lindsay Young Distinguished Professor Took several mainly sabbaticals, including one with Peter Doherty (another veterinarian) in Canberra and Hermann Wagner for one year in Mainz, Germany Worked on the immunology of herpesvirus infections supported continuously by multiple NIH grants until the lad was closed in Dec 2022.Published >470 research articles and reviews with and h index 91 and won several Research Achievement awards. Dr. Keith Jerome is a renowned virologist whose research focuses on viruses such as herpes simplex, HIV and hepatitis B that persist in their hosts. He studies the ways in which these viruses evade the immune system and potential therapies for these infections. Dr. Jerome and his colleagues are studying the uses of precision gene-editing tools like CRISPR/Cas9 to remove damaging viral genes that have tucked themselves into a person’s genetic code or to insert genes that can protect cells from invading viruses. He and his colleagues are exploring this approach in combination with blood stem cell transplants as a means of curing HIV. Dr. Jerome also studies the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Márcia C. A. Fantini is Full Professor of Physics at University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil. She received her MsSc from University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in 1980 and her PhD degree from the same university in 1985, under the supervision of Prof.Dr. Iris C.L. Torriani, in the Crystallography Laboratory of GlebWatachin Physics Institute of UNICAMP. From 1987 up to 1989 she was a pos-doc fellow at the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, USA. In 1989 she was hired at USP and became part of the Crystallography Laboratory at the Physics Institute (IFUSP). She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1995 and since 2008 she is full professor at IFUSP. Since 1995 she integrates and coordinates the Crystallography Laboratory. She was secretary, treasurer and teaching secretary of the Brazilian Crystallography Association (ABCr, 1992-2012), president of ABCr (2014-2016) and provisory president of Latin America Crystallography Association (2014-2016). Dr. Tomas Hanke's research aims to develop a universal HIV-1 vaccine, which targets most global virus variants including escape mutants. He strives to maintain a balance between basic and translational research. He oversees a busy pre-clinical programme encompassing HIV-1 epitope discovery and dynamics using mass spectrometry and T-cell assays, studies on immunodominance, depth (number of variants) of epitope recognition and the importance of perfect vaccine-virus epitope matching for effective effector functions. He explores novel vaccine modalities and optimize their immunogenicity in heterelogous prime-boost regimens in mice and macaques. He co-ordinates a clinical programme assessing candidate HIV vaccines in humans in UK, Europe and Africa.

Chil-Yong (Yong) Kang, PhD, DSc, FRSC, is a molecular virologist and Professor of Virology in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.He completed his post-graduate study in virology at McMaster University in Canada and took his postdoctoral training at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He received his Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degrees from McMaster University and from Carleton University in Canada.He served as a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, and Dean of Science at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Kang’s research in molecular virology includes the development of viral-specific antiviral therapeutic agents and efficacious vaccines against various human viral diseases. Dr. Kang has developed a second-generation vaccine against the hepatitis B virus and an experimental vaccine against HIV-1(SAV001)by using state-of-the-art genetic engineering and biotechnology. Dr. Kang has created a replication-competent recombinant vesicular stomatitis viral vectors as a vaccine platform to develop vaccines against hepatitis C, Ebola hemorrhagic fever, MERS, Zika virus microcephaly, HIV/AIDS, and SARS-CoV-2. I have a long-standing fascination with the immune system, and specifically the development and maintenance of immunological memory in the context of natural infection or prophylactic vaccination. Since joining CTL, I have been exploring the utility of the ImmunoSpot (ELISPOT/FluoroSpot) assay platform for performing detailed characterization of rare antigen-specific B cell populations. In particular, my research group is leveraging the ImmunoSpot assay approach to evidence affinity maturation of the adaptive B cell response elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection and/or COVID-19 vaccination.

Dr .Desmond Maada Kangbai is a medical doctor and a field epidemiologist working for the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), Government of Sierra Leone. He works as the Program Manager of the Child Health and Expanded Program on Immunization and is also the Vaccine Pillar Lead of the National COVID-19 Emergency Response Centre in the Country. As the head of immunization services, he is responsible for overseeing the country's vaccination programs and ensuring that they are accessible to all Sierra Leoneans.
