Biography

Dr. H. C. Yee (Helen M.C. Yee) obtained her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in continuum and discrete dynamical systems and minoring in applied mathematics. After her PhD she worked at the NASA Ames Research Center for 40 years performing fundamental research in the fields of computational physics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and nonlinear dynamics: Her work concentrated on numerical algorithm development in high order high-resolution shock-capturing methods and low dissipative high order methods for highspeed shock/turbulence/combustion interactions for gas dynamics and MHD systems. She and her international collaborators also worked extensively in the area of "Dynamics of Numerics for Computational Physics" , which has important implications on the interpretation and reliability of complex nonlinear numerical simulations in general and on the numerical prediction of flow transition by DNS in particular. By an improved understanding of the nonlinear discrete dynamical system related to the chosen continuum system, new and reliable methods can be constructed to improve numerical uncertainty of hypersonic nonequilibrium flows. The central issue is that the solution space of discrete nonlinear systems is much larger than that of the corresponding nonlinear continuous system. They have developed several new reliable and accurate methods by this nonlinear approach. For the past 15 years, together with her many collaborators, she concentrated on the development of well-balanced and subcell-resolution high order methods to minimize wrong propagation speed of discontinuities for stiff reacting flows. In addition, they develop new high order entropy conserving methods in combination with high order skew-symmetric splitting methods that conserved momentum and/or kinetic energy preserving with applications in aerodynamics, astrophysics, and fluid/plasma dynamics. For the past three years, they integrate the quantification of numerical uncertainty via nonlinear dynamical approach with their high order entropy split/physical-preserving method to improve the predictability and reliability in turbulence with strong shocks complex fluid flow simulations.

Dr. Darren McKnight is currently Senior Technical Fellow for LeoLabs. Working closely with partners and customers throughout the industry, he creates new data depictions, develops risk algorithms, and leads space incident investigations. As a member of the International Academy of Astronautics’ Space Debris Committee, Darren has been active in position paper development, selection of symposia papers, and execution of the annual International Astronautical Congress. His current focus is on developing technical solutions and encouraging global behavior that leads to sustained space operations assurance through limiting the risk of debris collision hazard to space systems in Earth orbit.

Dr. Timothy Sands is on the engineering faculty at Cornell University since 2020, where his research and teaching focus on astronautical engineering and systems engineering. From 2010 through 2020, he was an executive and senior leader of both military postgraduate universities (the Air Force Institute of Technology and the Naval Postgraduate School respectively), serving sequentially as Chief Academic Officer, Associate Provost, Dean, Associate Dean, and research center Director in addition to serving as a Fellow of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He was coordinator of EU Regional projects: METaGEAR (Gears, Materials, Robotics), INDGEAR (condition monitoring) and HPGA Fortissimo (applications of high performance computing); he was coordinator of several international and national projects. He published 2 Books, more than 80 Journal papers and more than 100 conference papers. Bibliometry: 176 papers on Scopus, h-index 36, more than 3000 citations. He served as the president of the Korean Society of Aeronautics and Space Sciences, KSAS, a major academic society in Aerospace in Korea, and served/serving as a vice president or president of several academic societies including the Innovative Defense Acquisition Society-Korea, IDEAS-K, KSAA, and KOSSE, KSCM. He is the corresponding author or co-author of over 600 publications including 13 patents and 74 top international journal papers. His research interests are Urban Air Mobility, Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization, MDO, Aerodynamic Design and Optimization, Aerospace Vehicle Design for Aircraft, Space Launcher, UAV/Drones, Digital Twin/Flight simulation and Artificial Intelligence Applications for Aerospace Vehicles. He received several honors and awards in his academic career. My research is concerned with developing polymeric materials with improved performance suitable for use in demanding environments and technologically relevant applications (e.g. satellites, military and civil aerospace, high performance automotive applications, micro-/opto-electrionics and polymer filters). This may take the form of novel synthesis (of monomers) or blending of existing commercial materials. To gain the best out of these materials, it is of key importance to understand the structures that they form (in terms of the bonds they form or the 3-dimensional structures that they adopt) so that these might be subtly improved. My group employs cutting edge techniques to combine state of the art computer modelling and simulation techniques, with sophisticated analysis (at the atomic or molecular level through spectroscopy or at the macroscopic scale through thermo-mechanical techniques). Computer simulation requires the use of software both developed by us, e.g. in the kinetic modelling of polymer cure and commercial packages e.g. in the calculation of the physical and mechanical properties of synthetic polymers.

Prior to joining the faculty at Washington University in 2001, Professor Agarwal was the Chair of the Aerospace Engineering Department at Wichita State University from 1994 to 1996 and the Executive Director of National Institute for Aviation Research from 1996 to 2001. From 1994 to 2001, he was also the Bloomfield Distinguished Professor at Wichita State University. From 1978 to 1994, Professor Agarwal worked in various scientific and managerial positions at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories in St. Louis. He became the Program Director and McDonnell Douglas Fellow in 1990. From 1976 to 1978, Professor Agarwal worked as a NRC Research Associate at NASA Ames Research Center and as a Principal Research Engineer at Rao and Associates in Palo Alto, California from 1975 to 1976.

He received his first degree on Solid Mechanics in Sichuan University China in 1982 and was awarded PhD on Structural Behaviour of Polymeric Pipelining in University of Bradford UK in 1993. He was Reader in Lightweight Composite Materials and Structures at the University of Liverpool. He has published more than 160 SCI papers in refereed leading international journals on lightweight composite structures subjected to extreme loading conditions such as projectile impact and blast, covering fibre metal laminates, PVC foambased sandwiches and SLM lattice structures, corrugated sandwiches, timber structures, high temperature TP prepreg, etc., with a h-index of 37 in Google Scholar and citation more than 4400. He was Chairman of the 5th International Conference on Computational Methods held in Cambridge in 2014. He is a member of editorial board of International Journal of Impact Engineering and Applied Composite Materials. He also serves as a scientific committee member of more than 20 international conferences and has given more than 20 keynotes, thematic and plenary speeches.

Enric Garcia Torrents, MD-PhD candidate and professor in training, cognitive scientist specialized in psychological anthropology, ethnopsychiatry, social approaches to mental health, and human bio-cultural diversity and its applications in medicine. Currently doctoral researcher at the Medical Anthropology Research Center, University Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain), and medical student at the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona, working at the interface between social and health sciences. His main research project, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Universities until October 2026, is an action-research one focused on assessing ways to eliminate coercion in mental health settings through patient and stakeholders engagement. His previous research experience includes working for the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics (CodeX) of Stanford Law School (California, USA), the James E. Kolbjørn Blix (58) is Vice President of Andøya Space (ASP), heading the Sub-Orbital division. He joined ASP back in 2001 as a Technical Manager, coming from a 20-year long career as an avionics officer in the Norwegian Airforce. He’s married and have four children aged 16 to 34. Dr. Alireza Tavakkoli received his BSc (Electronics) and MSc (Electronics) from Sharif University of Technology in 2001 and 2004, respectively. He received his MSc and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2006, and 2009, respectively. Dr. Tavakkoli is currently an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he teaches courses in computer vision, digital interactive gaming and robotics. He has a broad background in machine learning and visual computing, with specific training and expertise in computer vision, virtual reality, computer graphics and artificial intelligence. Dr. Tavakkoli's research includes investigating mathematical and computational frameworks to extract high-level salient information from basic imagery with applications to robotics, visualization and assistive technologies. He has been the recipient of several research grants from the industry and federal agencies for his teaching and research.

Aris Ikiades obtained his PhD in Optical Communications from the University of Kent (UK), having received an MSc in 1987 in Laser Physics and Non-Linear Optics from the University of Essex, and a BSc. (Hons) in Applied Physics from the University of South Bank, London in 1984. He is currently employed as an Assistant Professor in Physics department, University of Ioannina, prior to which, from 1993 to 2004 he was a Research Scientist at FORTH IESL, Iraclion, Crete. In the early 90Â’s he was Development Engineer at York Sensors Ltd and before this was a Research Fellow at University of Kent He has published over 40 publications in fibre optics and telecommunication journals and conferences. His research interests are fibre optic sensing, and FBG, LPG Whispering gallery Modes and mirroring evanescent sensing and fibre optic ice detection . His experience includes FBG-based distributed strain / temperature sensor, , fibre lasers and amplifiers, Raman fibre optical Distributed Temperature Sensor and a Q-switched fibre laser. Maria M. Kuznetsova (aka Masha Kuznetsova) is an astrophysicist in the Space Weather Laboratory at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the director of the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC). Her main scientific interests are in the area of space plasma physics and space environment modeling. For over 30 years she is actively involved in a study of critical magnetosphere phenomena including magnetic reconnection, mechanisms of collisionless dissipation, current-driven instabilities, particle acceleration, structure and stability of magnetospheric thin current sheets, theory and modeling of FTEs. Her research interests also include global MHD modeling of magnetosphere dynamics and implementation of kinetic effects in MHD models. Dr. Kuznetsova was heavily involved in CCMC activities since it establishement in 1998 andsignificantly contributed to establishing CCMC as one of the world leading space weather modeling and service centers. At CCMC Dr. Kuznetsova leads science-based validation efforts for a wide variety of space weather models, tools and space weather forecasting techniques. Dr. Kuznetsova earned her PhD in theoretical and mathematical physics from the Space Research Institute (IKI) in Moscow, Russia in 1987 and an M.S. in Physics, Physics of Plasma from Moscow State University in 1981. She has worked at the theoretical physics department of Space Research Institute from 1981-1993. In 1993 she joined NASA/GSFC as a National Research Council Research Associate. After the NRC fellowship, Dr. Kuznetsova became a Raytheon principal scientist. She reunited with GSFC as civil service astrophysicist in 2004. Dr. Kuznetsova leads the CCMC support of Modeling Challenges and Focus Groups at the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) and Coupling, Energetics, and Dynamics of Atmospheric Regions (CEDAR). She launched an International Forum on Space Weather Capabilities Assessment and initiated Space Weather REDI (Research, Education, Development Initiative) program aiming to facilitate hands-on space weather education. Masha Kuznetsova is an organizer of many International Space Weather Schools and is a member of Science Organizing Committees at many domestic and international conferences including International Living With a Star (ILWS) - COSPAR Science for Space Weather Workshop and US/UN Workshop on International Space Weather Initiative. She currently serves as CCMC liaison at NASA LWS and NSF GEM Steering Committees and is a member of NASA’s Space Environment Capabilities Leadership (CLT) Team. Dr. Kuznetsova is a recipient of 2013 NASA Robert H Goddard Exceptional Achievement Award. In 2017 she was awarded NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal.

Dr. Maj Mirmirani is currently serving as the Interim Dean of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University, a position he has held since June 2022. Prior to assuming his leadership role at Ohio University, he was the dean and a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s (ERAU) College of Engineering at Daytona Beach Florida from 2007-2022. Embry-Riddle is the world’s largest and most prestigious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. Peter has written more than 250 papers and books in the field of comfort, performance and design of interior designs. His latest book is ‘Vehicle Seat Comfort and Design’ (publisher Pumbo, 2016), which is a follow up of ‘Aircraft Interior Comfort and Design’, co-authored by Klaus Brauer, one of the leading designers of the Boeing 787 interior (CRC Press, Boca Raton, 2011). One of Peter’s current projects is the interior of the Flying V. Peter received his PhD degree in 1989 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Leiden in the field of biomechanics. Changping Yu is an associate professor at the State Key Laboratory of High Temperature Gas Dynamics, Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and he achieve the PHD from Peking University. Dr. Llanos currently serves as an Associate Professor (Tenured) in Space Operations at the Applied Aviation Sciences department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Over the past 10 years, he has mentored over 25 undergraduate and graduate students with various backgrounds in Space Operations, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Physics. Pedro has been immersed in the trajectory mission design, navigation, and orbit determination of space weather missions to the Lagrange points L5 and L4, and the development of software to investigate the flight dynamics of the James Webb Space Telescope. He also served as a trajectory analyst for a prospective Near-Earth Asteroid mission at the Keck Institute for Space Studies at Caltech while he was a JPL Visiting Student Researcher (JVSRP) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Dr. Llanos has been engaged in the design, development, testing and launch of payloads on various flights aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard, NASA's WB-57 aircraft, NASA/Zero-G parabolic flights and other suborbital stakeholders to assess the microgravity environment effects and other flight stressors. From S.T.E.M. payloads (NanoLabs, NanoSats) to more advanced in-vitro and in-vivo science experiments - payloads with significant impact on applied basic research and technologies demonstration. He has wide experience of missions' aspects of payloads, such as instrumentation, sensor operation and training equipment. He is the former supervisor of the Suborbital Space Flight Simulator at ERAU where he was engaged in the safe integration and trajectory modeling of suborbital flights into the National Air Space and above using ADS-B data to ensure safety while enhancing science operations. Pedro has gained industrial experience in aerospace/aviation physiology research during aerobatic flights and hypobaric environments using simulation for slow-onset hypoxia scenarios, IVA spacesuit operations and training, and payload validation and acceptance for suborbital rockets. Pedro earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Astronautical Engineering from University of Southern California, a M.S degree in Physics (Astrophysics) from University of Oklahoma, and B.S. Juha-Pekka ("Jussi") Luntama is the Head of the Space Weather Office in ESA's Space Safety Programme. Space Weather Office is responsible for definition, architecture design and implementation of the ESA Space Weather System and delivery of the corresponding pre-operational services. Space Weather Office is also responsible for development of software applications, ground systems, hosted payload instruments and dedicated SmallSat and nanosatellite missions for the ESA Space Weather System. The Space Weather Office is liaising with international entities and representing ESA in international forums on space weather related topics. Mr. Luntama is also the Mission Scientist and Mission Manager for the Lagrange mission that is in preparation to provide unprecedented space weather monitoring data for operational applications from the 5th Lagrangian point, L5.

Dr. Jeevan Perera is a Senior Engineer at NASA, Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He has had assignments in varying technical and management areas and disciplines including as the risk manager for several manned space programs such as the International Space Station, the Orion Spacecraft (crewed moon and exploration vehicle) and others. Other roles have included the shared responsibility for the management of program business and project planning activities, management and assessment of project budgets, procurement, contracts, configuration management, security, information technology, project schedules, and others. In his early risk work, he designed, developed, implemented and improved the International Space Station risk management process through a phased approach. Under this pathfinding redevelopment initiative, he conceptually designed and oversaw the development of a new comprehensive risk system that is now the standard risk system within all NASA manned programs. His early focus area was in software development which included management/oversight duties over versions of the primary and back-up flight software for the Space Shuttle. Dr Perera has been with NASA for nearly 34 years and has earned both a Jurisprudence Doctorate (licensed to practice law), a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and a licensed pilot.

Karolina Armonaite has obtained her PhD in computational neuroscience at Uninettuno University, Rome, Italy, in 2022, where she currently is a postdoctoral fellow at the "Uninettuno High-Energy" Research Group. She is also affiliated in the Laboratory LET’S, Institute of Cognitive Science and Technologies, National Research Council, Rome Italy. She teaches courses of "Physics of neural networks and artificial intelligence" and "Data Analysis" at the Faculty of Engineering. Her main research interests are applied computational methods and neuroscience.

Kato has a background in architectural engineering and space studies. She has been a pilot for over 10 years. Her passion for aviation started as a glider pilot with the Belgian Air Cadets. During her master's degree in space studies, her focus shifted from aviation to space. Kato has been an analogue astronaut on several missions where she performed the roles of Vice-Commander and Commander. In early 2023, she began her role as Director of Operations for the HI-SEAS habitat. The Lunar-like lava field and analog space research are a very exciting and interesting work environment for her. Her hobbies include hiking, traveling and all kinds of adventures.

Filomena Loffredo is a Researcher at the University of Naples Federico II. Filomena got her PhD in Innovative Technologies for Materials, Sensors and Imaging in 2015. Her research activity is focused on the exposure of humans to ionizing radiation and therefore also concerns space dosimetry for the radiation protection of astronauts during space missions. In this framework, Filomena has developed and validated a code allowing to perform numerical tests with the aim of evaluating the interaction secondary products and their contribution to the dose.

Kamesh Namuduri is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and the director of Autonomous Systems Laboratory at the University of North Texas (UNT). He received his B.S. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Osmania University, India, in 1984, M.S. degree in Computer Science from University of Hyderabad in 1986, and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from University of South Florida in 1992. Over the past eleven years, his research is focused on aerial networking and communications. He co-organized a series of workshops on “Airborne Networking and Communications” in conjunction with IEEE, AIAA, AUVSI, and ACM Conferences. He is serving as the chair for two Standards Working Groups (IEEE 1920.1: Aerial Communications and Networking and IEEE P1920.2: Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications for Unmanned Aircraft Systems). He is serving as the Chair for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society’s Ad Hoc Committee on Drones. He is a co-editor for the book titled “UAV Networks and Communications” published by the Cambridge University Press in 2017. He is leading the Smart and Connected Community project on “Deployable Communication Systems” in collaboration with the government, public, and private organizations. This living laboratory project was demonstrated thrice during the Global City Teams Challenge hosted jointly by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and US Ignite in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Dr Chris Worrall For the last 13 years Chris has been responsible for helping TWI’s Industrial Members solve some of the problems they face with exploiting the benefits of composite materials, using his experience and expertise to deliver composites joining, and structural integrity projects. He has spent 10 years in Japan working in the automotive, aerospace, renewable energy and rail transport industries, and lecturing at a University. Before leaving the UK, Chris worked in a research laboratory on the processing of novel thermoplastic composite materials, manufacturing failure analysis, and developing novel testing and analysis methods for composite materials. His 35 years of composites expertise covers; composite-metal joining, thermoplastic composite welding, microstructure characterisation, fire testing and mechanical testing of composite materials (including impact, fracture and toughness), structural and electromagnetic finite element analysis, design of composite structures, manufacturing technology for composite materials. Chris holds a PhD in the field of impact of composite sandwich structures in addition to a BSc in metallurgy and materials science.

Ruxandra is the Canada Research Chair Tier 1 Holder in Aircraft Modeling and Simulation Technologies since 2011, and she is the Head of the Laboratory of Applied Research in Active Controls, Avionics and AeroServoElasticity LARCASE since 2003. Ruxandra is AIAA Associate Fellow, CASI (Canadian Aeronautical Society Institute) Fellow, CAE (Canadian Academy of Engineering) Fellow and Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) Fellow. Ruxandra is Member of the Adaptive Structures committee and Faculty Advisor of the AIAA Branch at ÉTS. She is Editor-in-Chief of the INCAS Bulletin and Associate Editor of various journals (The Aeronautical Journal, etc.). Ruxandra graduated more than 24 PhD students, 120 Master’s students (projects and theses) and 300 Internship students in her academic career. Ruxandra published more than 185 archival original journal articles, 300 conference papers and 7 invited book chapters. SMAHAT Amine was born in Oran, Algeria, in 1987. He received his engineering degree in mechanics from USTO of Oran (Algeria) in 2010. He received his magister and PHD degree in mechanical behaviour of structure from UDL of Sidi Bel Abess (Algeria) in 2012 and 2016 respectively. He is currently searcher in the satellite development center (CDS) of the Algerian space agency (ASAL). His research interests are behaviour of structure under impact loading and dynamic analysis of structure.
