The Ruohola-Baker laboratory is dissecting the molecular mechanisms that control stem cell self-renewal and regeneration capacity, both in normal and pathological situations. The laboratory has identified metabolic differences between pluripotent, pre- and post-implantation ESC and is now dissecting how metabolites regulate the stem cell epigenetic state. The laboratory works on three questions: 1) metabolic determinants of stem cells and regeneration 2) stem cell aging and 3) using stem cells to dissect the mechanism of disease states. The laboratory will dissect the etiology of long chain fatty acid induced SIDS, a heart defect that can cause sudden infant death. The laboratory will also study Amelogenesis Imperfect (AI), a defects in stem cells for ameloblasts that normally deposit enamel, the hardest tissue in our body.

Prof. Lei Wang is a Microbiology Professor at Nankai University, China, with a rich academic background. He previously held the position of Vice President at Nankai University. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of the Chinese Society for Microbiology and is a member of the Disciplines Review Board (Biology) at the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council of China. Moreover, he is a member of the Biological and Medical Sciences Division Committee at the Science and Technology Commission, Ministry of Education of China. His primary research interests include the molecular evolution of bacteria at the whole-genome level, virulence mechanisms of bacterial pathogens, and bacterial molecular serotyping. Professor Leung graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992, and he received subspecialty training on Immunology and Allergy in the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1997-1998. He was awarded Doctor of Medicine degree by The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004 for his research works on immunogenetics of childhood asthma. Professor Leung was conferred as a First Fellow in Paediatric Immunology, Allergy and Infectious Diseases subspecialty by the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians in 2012. Professor Leung is a professor in Department of Paediatrics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2009, and he chaired this Department in 2014-2020. He is also a visiting professor of the Central South University in Changsha, People’s Republic of China. Among many research achievements, Professor Leung was nominated to receive the Research Excellence in Allergic Diseases Award by the Hong Kong Institute of Allergy in September 2021. Professor Leung published more than 400 refereed journal articles and supervised sevenpost-doctoral fellows, 12 doctoral and 35 doctoral and master students as well as mentored 12 elite medical students under the Flagship programme Global Physician-Leadership Stream of the Faculty.

Jean Maruani is a French physicist and chemist, who has made significant contributions to the fields of quantum chemistry, molecular physics, and quantum systems. He is an Honorary Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France, and a former Professor at the University of Paris-Sud and the École Normale Supérieure. He is also the founder and president of the Center for Applied Wave Mechanics (CMOA), and the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry. He has authored or co-authored more than 500 scientific publications and 25 books, and has received numerous awards and honors, such as the CNRS Silver Medal, the Humboldt Prize, the Paul Langevin Prize, and the Grand Prix of the French Academy of Sciences. Prof. Raymond J Turner is a faculty professor and professor emeritus of biological sciences in microbiology, biochemistry and environmental chemistry at the university of calgary. He has received recognitions for his work on biogenically produced nano materials from the international association of advanced materials. Prof. Turner's research focuses on investigating the principles and mechanisms of microbial physiology, protein biochemistry, and bacterial systems. He is particularly interested in the toxicity and resistance of metals and metalloids towards bacteria, and the bioremediation of selenium and tellurium compounds. Prof. Charles McCall, MD, is a distinguished professor of molecular medicine, clinical and translational science, and microbiology and immunology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He is also the associate dean and director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the same institution. He has been a faculty member since 1968 and has held various leadership positions, such as leading the Infectious Diseases Section, directing the NIH General Clinical Research Center, and founding a Section on Molecular Medicine within Internal Medicine. Prof. McCall has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, 6 books, and 50 book chapters on various topics related to sepsis, inflammation, immunology, and molecular medicine. Dr. Jiro Kishimoto has obtained his PhD from Kyoto Universityin 1994. After joining Shiseido Research Center, he was trained in neuroscience in University of Cambridge / MRC in U.K. in 1991-1993, and also in dermatology as a research fellow in MGH/Harvard Cutaneous Biology Research Center (CBRC) during 1996-1999. He developed hair follicle reconstitution model system and proved the involvement of Wnt pathway for hair inductivity. After his appointment as a head of Hair Research Lab. and Skin Biology Research Lab. at Shiseido, he is currently section director of Regenerative Medicine Research & Business Development Section since 2015. I am an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. My research focuses on developing and applying novel bioinformatics approaches to translational science to help identify novel disease risk factors and therapeutic targets, specifically for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. My expertise is omics analysis of disease models, including whole exome and genome sequencing, bulk and single cell transcriptomics, cell type deconvolution, proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, as well as multiomics integration. My research will enable the discovery and validation of novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

received his BSc degree in Medical Technology from King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah. His master and PhD were awarded (with commendation) from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom in Biotechnology. Currently, he is working as an assistant professor of Biotechnology and Molecular Genetics at King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences. Dr. Alhadrami has enough experience in the development, characterisation, and optimisation of several bioluminescence SOS-lux based biosensors for mutagenicity, carcinogenicity and toxicity assessment. He has significant experience in the field of Biosensors, Tissue Engineering, Microfluidics, Lab-on-a-chip, Medical Biotechnology and Nanbiotechnology. He has supervised several master students and taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at both the University of Aberdeen and King Abdulaziz University. Dr.Remya Mohanraj earned her doctorate from Bharathiar University, India. Her area of research includes plant tissue culture, hytochemical analysis and isolation of therapeutic biomolecules from medicinal plants. She has been teaching college students for more than 18 years and has held several leadership roles viz. head of the department, course director and assistant registrar. She has served in the academic council and board of studies and facilitated curriculum development and curriculum changes. In addition, she had initiated and significantly contributed to the development of various laboratories and is a recipient of multiple grants. Dr. Mohanraj is a reviewer and editorial board member in various International scientific journals. Prof. Barakat received his PhD in biophysics from the University of Alberta in 2012 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the lab of the Nobel Laureate, Professor Michael Houghton, for two years. Farahnaz Fahimipour, Periodontology Class of 2022, was born and raised in the historic city of Yazd in the middle of Iran. As her first outstanding achievement, she received the Khwarizmi Presidential National Award for young innovators when she was 17 years old. Through a combination of her love for treating patients and a passion for art, she chose to pursue dentistry. She received her Doctor of Dental Medicine from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU), Tehran. During her time at SBMU, she worked as a research fellow in the field of craniomaxillofacial tissue engineering and trained on developing tissue mimetic biomaterials for stem cell therapy and growth factor delivery.

She has a master's degree in bioinformatics from Cairo University and a bachelor's degree in biotechnology from Helwan University. She has over five years of experience in applying bioinformatics tools and techniques to various biological and medical problems, such as gene expression analysis, genome annotation, phylogenetic analysis, and drug discovery. Ibrahim is a dedicated research assistant and bioinformatics instructor at the Bioinformatics Department within the Agriculture Genetic Engineering Research Institute (AGERI) | ARC, Giza, Egypt. Additionally, he serves as a Bioinformatics Assistant (Consultant) at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) | CGIAR. He earned his BSc degree in Agricultural Biotechnology from the Biotechnology Department at the Faculty of Agriculture, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. Currently, Saifeldeen is pursuing his MSc degree in Biotechnology with a specialization in Bioinformatics at the same faculty. He has actively contributed to multiple projects in the field of plant biology. His primary focus lies in plant genomics and transcriptomics. In genomics, his keen interest centers around genome-wide identification studies, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and the comprehensive process of whole genome sequencing, including assembly and annotation. Within the realm of transcriptomics, he demonstrates a strong inclination towards identifying biomolecular markers and investigating expression patterns through RNA-seq data analysis and differential gene expression (DGE) analysis. Furthermore, his expertise extends to single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). In metagenomics, he holds experience in amplicon sequencing, particularly in the analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) data. My passion is cure Type1 Diabetes by transplantation of beta cells. Presently I am working to generate Neo-beta cells for imminent transplantation in Type 1 Diabetes patients with minimum immunosuppression. I have developed a protocol for the conversion of somatic cells into insulin producing cells within 14 days-which is completely unheard of so far. I have dealt with the problem of organ shortage in end stage organ failure patients. Due to having physiological and anatomical similarities pigs are considered as good donors for islets. I have dealt with the problem of innate and adaptive immunity mediated xeno-islet rejection of pig organs in non-human primates models. To avoid of prevailing use of life long immune suppression, I have developed transgenic pigs expressing human derived natural immune suppressor molecules using CRISPR-CAS9 mediated knock in. Those pigs are considered as Stealth Donor Pigs for the transplantation of pig organs in Pig to monkey xenotransplantation models. For the first time I have proven that pig islet derived miR375 can be used as a strong predictor to figure out post- transplant islet engraftment.Before that, I have worked on epigenetics of FoxP3 in regulating the immune suppression in leprosy patients. Molecular cross-talk of FoxP3 with HDAC7, 9 and HAT turned out to be crux of this mechanism. This study redefine the fact that FoxP3 can act both as a transcriptional repressor and transcriptional inducer.

Muhammad Mazhar, a doctoral student at Guizhou University China, is leading this research project, which is expected to be completed by the next year. The present study focuses on the investigation of Adzuki beans and their endogenous components, including the determination of their glycemic index, phenolic profile, and fermentation by human gut microbiota. Additionally, this research aims to explore the genomics and metabolomics of fermented beans. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights into the nutritional and health benefits of Adzuki beans and their potential as a functional food source. The combined effects of endogenous components of adzuki beans will be evaluated for type 2 diabetes patients.
